This research analyzes the position of Mexico in the world system after the implementation of NAFTA. For such a purpose the author starts enunciating the theoretical postulates developed by Immanuel Wallerstein in the 70s regarding the concepts of center, periphery and semi periphery. Moreover, the author complements this theory with an analysis carried out by David Smith and Douglas White in 1992, who state that the position in the world system of any country is determined by examining its commercial commodities exchange, in addition to that, they mention that the position occupied by the country also influences in its preferences to do business with other partners. To determine the position of Mexico in the world system, the author analyses the Mexican exports focusing on its commodities. Afterwards, to know its main trade partners, the author shows statistics on the trade balance between Mexico and United States, a country from the center and its main partner in NAFTA, and between México and Ecuador, a country from the periphery. Thanks to the empirical data analysis under the world system theory, complemented by Smith and White, the author will achieve her objective.
Esta investigación analiza la posición de México en el sistema mundo después de la implementación del TLCAN. Para tal propósito, la autora comienza enunciando los postulados teóricos desarrollados por Immanuel Wallerstein en los años 70 con respecto a los conceptos de centro, periferia y semiperiferia. Además, el autor complementa esta teoría con un análisis realizado por David Smith y Douglas White en 1992, quienes afirman que la posición en el sistema mundo de un país, se determina examinando su intercambio comercial de bienes, además, señalan que la posición ocupada por el país también influye en sus preferencias para hacer negocios con otros socios. Para determinar la posición de México en el sistema mundo, la autora analiza las exportaciones mexicanas enfocándose en sus productos básicos. Posteriormente, para conocer sus principales socios comerciales, la autora muestra estadísticas sobre la balanza comercial entre México y Estados Unidos, un país del centro y su principal socio en el TLCAN, y entre México y Ecuador, un país considerado de la periferia. Gracias al análisis de los datos empíricos bajo la teoría del sistema mundo, complementado por Smith y White, la autora logrará su objetivo.
