Description

El maíz de Sierra en el Ecuador supera notablemente en superficie cultivada a la de otros cultivos básicos, y constituye uno de los componentes fundamentales en la dieta de la población rural. El INIAP, consciente de la importancia de la conservación de este germoplasma, ha realizado diversas misiones de colecta y en la actualidad dispone de una colección de 961 accesiones. De este germoplasma, existen aún materiales que no han sido caracterizados ni evaluados. Ante este panorama, el Programa de Maíz en convenio con el PROMSA (Programa de Modernización de los Servicios Agropecuarios), ha puesto en marcha el proyecto: "Manejo Integral de los Recursos Fitogenéticos de Maíz en la Sierra Ecuatoriana"que entre otros objetivos plantea la caracterización agro-morfológica y molecular de las colectas existentes en el banco de germoplasma con fines de establecer una colección núcleo y la identificación de materiales promisorios para su utilización en fitoniejoramiento.
The high land corn in Ecuador overcomes notably in surface cultivated than of other basic crops and is the main component in the rural population's diet. The INIAP, knowing the importance of conservation of this germoplasm, had carried out diverse collecting expeditions and at present, has a collection of 961 accessions. Of this germoplasm, there are materials that have not been characterized neither evaluated. For this reason, the Corn Program in agreement with PROMSA (Program of Modernization of the Agricultural Services), has started the project: "Manage Integral of the Resources Plant Genetic of Corn in the Ecuadorian High Land" whose objective is the morphologic and molecular of existent collections at the germoplasm bank to establish a core collection and identify promissory materials for their use in plant breeding.
