Cut and paste: The first uses of collage and photomontage in the representation of modern architecture

Description: The graphic techniques of collage and photomontage, born within avant-garde art of the 1920s, mainly in Cubism, spread through and permeated all other arts, including architecture. Based on cutting and pasting elements or remnants of diverse materials in new combinations to express novel artistic principles and meanings, these apparently simple techniques offered strong potential for design and conceptualisation. They were widely used by some of the most important figures in Russian Constructivism, the Bauhaus and the Modern Movement, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.
Las técnicas gráficas del collage y el fotomontaje, nacidas en el seno de las vanguardias artísticas de los años veinte del pasado siglo, principalmente en el cubismo, se extendieron e impregnaron todas las artes, incluyendo la arquitectura; técnicas de una aparente sencillez operativa basadas en el recorte y pegado de elementos o retales de materiales heterogéneos que se re-combinaban atendiendo a nuevos principios y significados plásticos, llegando a adquirir una alta potencialidad de diseño y conceptualización. Destacaron en su utilización algunos de los más importantes representantes del constructivismo ruso, la Bauhaus y del Movimiento Moderno, como los maestros Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier y Mies van der Rohe.
