Las islas Galápagos se han desarrollado geológica y evolutivamente de manera separada del continente americano, esto ha permitido que sus especies tengan rasgos diferentes generando una importante biodiversidad endémica. Entre las especies más atractivas en las islas se encuentra el pingüino de Galápagos (Spheniscus mendiculus), una especie actualmente muy afectada por varios factores, principalmente el cambio climático y alteraciones de su hábitat, esto ha llevado a ubicarla como especie “En Peligro de extinción”, según la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN), ya que su población está disminuyendo rápidamente. El presente trabajo constituye una revisión bibliográfica comentada de la situación de esta ave endémica. Actualmente, se están llevando a cabo diferentes estrategias para mejorar el estado de conservación de esta especie con ayuda de diferentes instituciones gubernamentales y no gubernamentales, también se investigan diferentes eventos que aparentemente podrían ayudar a bajar temperaturas de las aguas marinas galapagueñas, evitando la extinción de esta especie. Cabe destacar que la existencia y adecuada gestión de la Reserva Marina Galápagos es un puntal indudable para garantizar el alimento y hábitat del pingüino galapagueño, una especie directamente indicadora de la salud de los ambientes marinos locales.
The Galapagos Islands have been geologically and evolutionarily developed in a separate way from the American continent, this has allowed their species to have different traits generating an important endemic biodiversity. The Galapagos penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus) is among the most attractive and sensitive species, affected by several factors, mainly climate change, habitat alterations. This has led to locate it as an Endangered species, according to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), as its population is rapidly decreasing. This work constitutes a commented literature revision about the situation of this endemic bird. Currently, different strategies are being carried out in order to improve its state of conservation, with the help/support of different governmental and non-governmental institutions. Different events are also being investigated that could apparently prevent changes in temperature of marine waters in Galapagos, avoiding in this way the extinction of this species. In this sense, it should be addressed that the existence and proper management of the Galapagos Marine Reserve is a guarantee to maintain the food and habitat of the Galapagos penguin, an indicator species of the health of local marine environments.
