Barriers and opportunities to innovation management in small and medium-sized enterprises in Ecuador: an analysis of food processing sector

The focus of this research is to identify the main barriers and opportunities that SMEs in Ecuador face to implement innovation management. It investigates the main drivers stimulating innovation and the main barriers perceived in SMEs to implement innovation management, particularly, in processed food producers. Additionally, the study analyses the role of government policies and programmes fostering innovation in these SMEs. The study is important in order to contribute with knowledge generation about the main obstacles that SMEs face to implement innovation management, in the context of Ecuador. This information is useful for policy makers and SMEs. Policy makers will gain a deeper understanding about the phenomena presented in this research in order to improve policies and programmes encouraging innovation in SMEs. Additionally, SMEs will gain a better understanding of the role of innovation management. This research project was mainly based on primary data collected from face-to-face structured interviews with 13 SMEs. Additionally, semi-structured interviews were conducted to relevant institutions and experts. The findings underlined that the main internal barrier perceived by SMEs is financial constraints, and the main external barrier, is related to laws, norms, regulations and taxes. These findings led to conclude that government policies present some fallacies that need to be addressed. This suggests that appropriate diffusion about innovation management and a better communication among SMEs and government institutions could foster innovation activities in SMEs.
El objeto de esta investigaci?n es identificar las principales barreras y oportunidades que afrontan las PYMES en Ecuador para implementar gesti?n de la innovaci?n, sobre todo aquellas que operan en el sector de alimentos procesados. El estudio de este tema es sumamente importante para contribuir con la gesti?n de la innovaci?n, en el contexto de Ecuador, y las oportunidades que se encuentran presentes. Sin embargo, esta informaci?n no solamente es ?til para los peque?os y medianos empresarios quienes obtendr?n una mejor comprensi?n acerca de c?mo gestionar la innovaci?n, pero tambi?n para los resultados que presenta esta investigaci?n con el fin de mejorar las pol?ticas y programas para estimular factores principales que estimulan la innovaci?n en las pymes ecuatorianas que operan el sector de alimentos procesados, identificar las principales barreras y oportunidades percibidas por estas Pymes gubernamentales han fomentado la gesti?n innovativa en las Pymes estudiadas. Por lo tanto, en este proyecto de investigaci?n se procedi? a realizar un estudio cualitativo, no probabil?stico, el cual se bas? principalmente en colectar datos primarios obtenidos de entrevistas estructuradas cara a cara con 13 Pymes y entrevistas semi-estructuradas realizadas a instituciones y expertos en la materia. Los hallazgos resaltaron que la principal barrera interna sigue siendo la limitaci?n financiera y, la principal barrera externa est? relacionada con leyes, normas, regulaciones e impuestos. Estos hallazgos llevaron a la conclusi?n de que las pol?ticas gubernamentales presentan algunas falacias que debe ser abordadas. Esto sugiere que la difusi?n adecuada sobre gesti?n de la innovaci?n y una mejor comunicaci?n entre PYMES e instituciones gubernamentales podr?a fomentar una mayor actividad innovativa dentro de las PYMEs.
