Two biodegradable materials were used: horse manure and cranberry fruit mixture material (HCM) and inedible plant biomass and organic biodegradable wastes mixtures of advanced life support (ALS) for space applications. Physical-chemical parameters and indices of stability/maturity, including maximum oxygen uptake rate (OURm) and germination index (GI), were measured in both at different stages of biodegradation, and correlated with tomato plant growth in both biodegraded and stabilized media to assess potential predictors of stability/maturity of biodegradable material suitable for plant growth. Consistent relationships between plant growth and several parameters were found with HCM, but poor correlations were found with ALS. We suggest that several tests in combination are preferable to gain more insight about the status of the biodegradable material, but that the best parameters to choose in a particular case are not universal, and should depend on knowledge of the particular biodegradable material and biodegradation process used.
