Description

Claw disorders such as Dermatitis digitalis (DD), interdigital dermatitis/heel horn erosion (IDHE) and sole hemorrhage (SH)are commonly observed in Dutch dairy herds. Claw disorders not only lead to lameness and affect animal welfare (green et al., 2002), but also result in high economic losses due to reduction of milk yield, early culling an reproduction problems (Manske et al., 2002, Bicalho et al., 2009). Many studies have been performed on prevalence and risk factors of claw disorder presence (Bicalho & Oikonomou, 2013), and show that DD, IDHE and SH have a multifactorial origin in wich housing, age and calving play a major role (Somers et al., 2005). However, the influence of those factors on the severity of claw lesions remains unclear and further studies should be done. Therefore, the aim of this study is to estimate the prevalence and to analyze the effect of grazing, calving and disease history on severity of claw disorders.
