This article analyzes the effect of consumption of news about lack of security, crime and the overwhelming effect on becoming a victim of crime (fear of crime). For this, a sample of 199 students from the Universidad de Los Andes in Merida, Venezuela was used. The results of this study indicates that students get their news through TV and the press on events primarily related to crime, that levels of fear of becoming a victim are significant, and there is also, a positive and significant relationship between these levels and consumption of news related to lack of security and crime.
