Turismo Sustentable Del Paralelo Cero En El Ecuador: Inventario Tur?stico, Mercados Y Desarrollo Local

The Equator Line extends from East to West and passes through the four Ecuadorian regions (The Amazon, Highlands, Coast and Galapagos), thus representing in itself a manifestation of the Ecuadorian natural and cultural diversity. The Ministry of Tourism is seeking to encourage the development of tourist destinations established along and around the Equator Line through the ?Ruta Paralelo Cero? initiative. Our objective was to analyze the inventory of tourist destinations, the market and local development, which are of paramount importance for promoting sustainable tourism along the Equator Line. We used methods of geographic and social analysis such as direct observation, interviews with local experts, semistructured surveys, cartographic mapping and geographic information system. We selected three tourist destinations and their surroundings: Highlands, Middle of the World City; Coast, Pedernales; and The Amazon, Cuyabeno Natural Reserve. All these destinations constitute a sample of the Ecuadorian diversity. Our results showed a number of natural and cultural attractions that highlight the potential for tourism at Paralelo Cero. The attractions in the Highlands are among the most visited sites, both by national and international tourists. The tourism demand on the Coast is mainly national, in contrast to that of the Amazon Region, which is mostly international. The greatest challenge for sustainable tourism is to overcome the current inequality in local economic development.
La zona ecuatorial atraviesa de Este a Oeste las cuatro regiones del Ecuador, Amazon?a, Sierra, Costa y Gal?pagos, representando de esta manera una muestra de la gran diversidad natural y cultural del Ecuador. A trav?s del Ministerio de Turismo se busca impulsar el desarrollo de los destinos tur?sticos asentados a lo largo y alrededor de la L?nea Equinoccial a trav?s del proyecto ?Ruta Paralelo Cero?. Es por esto que el objetivo de la investigaci?n est? encaminado a analizar el inventario de atractivos tur?sticos, el mercado y el desarrollo local importante para impulsar un turismo sustentable a lo largo de la L?nea Equinoccial. A trav?s de m?todos geogr?ficos y sociales como la observaci?n directa, entrevistas a expertos locales, encuestas semiestructuradas, levantamiento cartogr?fico y el uso de sistemas de informaci?n geogr?fica, se analiz? los objetivos planteados. Para el estudio se escogieron tres ?reas tur?sticas y sus alrededores, Sierra (Mitad del Mundo), Costa (Pedernales) y Amazon?a (Reserva del Cuyabeno), ?stas representan muestras de la diversidad que tiene el Ecuador. Los resultados mostraron una gran variedad de atractivos naturales y culturales que realzan el potencial tur?stico del Paralelo Cero. Los atractivos de la Sierra son los m?s visitados tanto por turistas nacionales como internacionales. En la Costa la demanda es eminentemente nacional, mientras que en la Amazon?a es extranjera. El desafio m?s grande para el turismo sustentable en la nueva ruta es superar la desigualdad del desarrollo local actual.
