Description

This thesis aims to analyse and establish the socioeconomic and demographic determinants of job satisfaction in Ecuador. The international literature is rich in the analysis of job satisfaction, however, despite the great extent of the research conducted, there has not been studies done in Ecuador in regards to the determinants of job satisfaction at a national level. Therefore, this thesis constitutes a novelty in this kind of studies in Ecuador. The period of analysis is 2007-2013 which represents the most stable politically in the past two decades. The data used for this analysis is the ENEMDU which includes relevant information of a socioeconomic and demographic nature for Ecuadorian workers and it consists of 33,060 observations per year on average providing a total of 231,419 observations for the whole period of the present empirical study. This period corresponds to the government of President Rafael Correa in which very relevant changes in regards to labour policy ?such as protection of workers? rights and constant increases in minimum wages? have been implemented with very positive results achieved. The majority of workers in Ecuador, 69.27% of the total of workers, is satisfied with their jobs for this period of analysis. Using a partial proportional odds (PPO) model it is evidenced that female workers are more satisfied than male workers, and black workers more satisfied than white workers. Age has a Ushaped effect on job satisfaction. Single workers are more satisfied than other categories of marital status. The number of hours of work per week has an inverted U-shaped effect. Finally, it is seen that job stability is a factor of a great importance for workers to be satisfied with their jobs.
