The metabolism of urban systems generates waste that have negative impacts on the environment. This dynamic is even more problematic in a local context with high-ecological value such as Galapagos, where an ineffective waste management might compromise the ecosystem irreversibly. In this research a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) of Santa Cruz ? the island with the highest anthropic pressure in the archipelago ? has been performed, focusing mainly on the planned and self-organized flows of waste. The study brings to light a complex pattern of waste exchange, where authorized public and private management systems work along with other informal practices, which often contribute positively to increasing the whole system?s efficiency. This analysis also suggests actions and strategies to improve the recycling processes within the island. This study proposes to extend this method of analysis to other sites, as a valuable tool to optimize resource use at local levels and reduce the environmental impact of human activities.
El metabolismo de los sistemas urbanos produce residuos que generan un impacto negativo sobre el medio ambiente. Esta din?mica es incluso m?s problem?tica en contextos de alto valor ecol?gico como Gal?pagos, donde una mala gesti?n de los residuos puede comprometer irreversiblemente el ecosistema. El presente trabajo de investigaci?n desarrolla un an?lisis de flujo de materiales en Santa Cruz ? la isla m?s antropizada de Gal?pagos ? profundizando particularmente en los flujos formales e informales de residuos en el sistema local. El estudio pone en evidencia un esquema complejo de intercambio de materiales, donde el sistema p?blico y privado de gesti?n de residuos integra pr?cticas informales que a menudo fortalecen la eficiencia general del sistema. El an?lisis tambi?n sugiere estrategias y acciones para mejorar los mecanismos de reciclo en la isla, adem?s de proponer replicar este tipo de estudio en contextos diversos, en cuanto es una herramienta ?til para optimizar el uso de recurso a nivel local y reducir el impacto ambiental.
