Description

Ecuador and Venezuela experienced a severe economic crisis on the 80s as most of the Latin American region did. This thesis argues that inequality of educational opportunity increased as a result of that period, with long-lasting effects on the human capital formation in both countries. In order to assess this impact on the educational opportunity, I look at the influence of family background on the educational attainment of four generations that were born between 1940 and 1975. I conduct a cohort analysis by using a generalized ordered logit model using the database of the 2001 national censuses. The findings confirm that inequality of educational opportunity increased for those cohorts that experienced and were most affected by the crisis, inhibiting them from graduating from secondary and entering postsecondary levels. In contrast, educational inequality did not increase at primary levels due to universalization of education.
