Polvo y ceniza by Eliécer Cárdenas engenders the legendary and mythical figure of the bandit hero. The first circumstances with which the protagonist Naún Briones faces teach him that, due to his condition as a third-rate citizen, he must be limited and subjected to a deceitful and unjust world in which he has no possibility of improvement due to his social condition. There is no solution in sight for him through the path of the law. His only alternative is to follow the path of assault, robbery or murder; this violence does germinate a change, even if it means being outside the law and death lurks around any sinister shortcut. His person became glorified because his mission was to help the abandoned and miserable; he brought welfare and satiated the hunger of the needy. He became a robinhoodsian outlaw who ended up immolating himself for a cause, at the very least, questionable.
Polvo y ceniza de Eliécer Cárdenas engendra la figura legendaria y mítica del héroe bandido. Las primeras circunstancias con las que se enfrenta el protagonista Naún Briones le enseñan que, por su condición de ciudadano de tercer orden, tiene que estar limitado y sometido a un mundo engañoso e injusto en el cual no tiene escapatoria de mejoramiento por su condición social. No se vislumbra una solución por el camino de la ley. Su única alternativa es seguir el sendero del asalto, el hurto o el asesinato; esta violencia sí germina un cambio, aunque signifique estar al margen de lo legal y la muerte se esconda a la vuelta de cualquier atajo siniestro. Su persona llegó a ser glorificada porque su misión fue ayudar a los abandonados y míseros; trajo bienestar y sació el hambre del necesitado. Se convirtió en un forajido robinhoodsiano que terminó inmolándose por una causa, por lo menos, cuestionable.
