La muerte del cirujano. Ansiedades coloniales e identidades colectivas en Cuenca, 1739 (Estudios)

Description: El artículo analiza las tensiones que enfrentaban a criollos y europeos en la Audiencia de Quito en el siglo XVIII, a través del caso de la muerte del cirujano Jean de Sénierges en la ciudad de Cuenca, durante la expedición geodésica a la región. El análisis de los relatos tejidos en torno al deceso del médico de la expedición muestra la progresiva consolidación de identidades políticas diferenciadas en la Colonia. Pone en evidencia, además, la importancia de analizar los motines urbanos como herramientas de acción colectiva, en las que se cristalizan estas identidades.
The article examines the tensions faced by Creole and European inhabitants in Eighteenth Century Quito through the case of the death of Jean de Sénierges, surgeon in the city of Cuenca, during the Geodesic expedition of the region. In-depth analysis of the stories woven around the death of the doctor of the expedition shows the progressive consolidation of different political identities in the colony. It highlights also the importance of analyzing the urban riots as tools for collective action, in which these identities crystallized.
