Manu and the vocal chords is a fiction short film. In this comedy in black and white, we follow Manu, our young French protagonist, on a decisive day in her life. After yet another failed attempt to meet her neighbor, Manu – a dental hygiene freak – stumbles upon her first ever cavity. This leads her to her first visit to the dentist. The work behind this short film has become a fascinating excuse to reflect on idealization and communication, as a means of affirming an optimistic vision on life, in a very personal and concrete way. Through this experience, I have confirmed my love for the creative process that exists behind filmmaking, particularly for the crafts of writing, directing, producing and editing. In this short film, we have explored certain visual and narrative elements that have implied a challenge within the ways storytelling is employed in our milieu. Manu and the vocal chords has motivated me to continue to pursue the craft of filmmaking in an honest and curious way, and to continue to contribute to the production of cinema in Ecuador – particularly in those areas that have been less explored. Finally, the collective efforts behind this short film have left me with the most gratifying sense of wonder.
Manu y las cuerdas bucales es un cortometraje de ficción. Desde la comedia y una estética en blanco y negro, seguimos a Manu, su joven protagonista francesa, en un día decisivo de su vida. Después de otro fallido intento de conocer a su vecino, Manu – una obsesiva por la higiene dental – descubre que tiene una carie. Esto la lleva a su primera visita al dentista. Este trabajo se ha convertido en una fascinante excusa para reflexionar sobre la idealización y la comunicación, con el fin de afirmar una visión optimista muy personal y concreta sobre la vida. Con esta experiencia he confirmado mi amor por el proceso creativo del cine, particularmente en la escritura, la dirección, la producción y la edición. La exploración de ciertos recursos narrativos y visuales ha implicado un reto frente a la forma en que se relatan historias en nuestro medio. Así, Manu y las cuerdas bucales me ha motivado a seguir haciendo cine desde la honestidad y la curiosidad, y a seguir contribuyendo a la producción de cine en Ecuador, sobre todo en las áreas menos exploradas. Finalmente, lo más valioso que me ha dejado este cortometraje es la maravilla del trabajo colectivo.
