A retranslation project must include a new reading of the work to be translated, a questioning of the origin of its canonic versions, and the elaboration of a new version, which at the same time constitutes a new reading. Based on this premise, this paper proposes a new way of reading a selection of poems by American author Charles Bukowski, based mainly on the concepts of the grotesque and carnival proposed by Russian philosopher and literary critic Mikhail Bakhtin. The paper then embarks on an analysis of the cultural and political context in which Bukowski’s works were first translated into Spanish, in Spain in the year 1978, after which a proposal is made in defense of the need of retranslating his works in order to allow contemporary Latin-American audiences to have access to them. The paper concludes with the translation of a selection of 10 poems by Charles Bukowski.
Plantear un proyecto de retraducción implica realizar una nueva lectura de la obra a traducirse, poner en tela de duda el origen de sus versiones canónicas y elaborar una nueva versión, que constituye a la vez una nueva lectura. Esta investigación se basa en esta premisa y plantea una relectura de un conjunto de poemas del escritor estadounidense Charles Bukowski, principalmente a partir de los conceptos del grotesco y del carnaval planteados por el filósofo y crítico literario ruso Mijaíl Bajtín. Luego, se inicia un análisis de las circunstancias culturales y políticas en las cuales la obra es traducida por primera vez al español en España, en el año 1978, a partir de lo cual se postula la necesidad de retraducir la obra para permitir su lectura desde un contexto contemporáneo latinoamericano. La investigación concluye con la traducción de un corpus de diez poemas de Charles Bukowski.
