Due that during the adolescent stage youngsters are seeking their identity and developing their personality, it is considered a difficult time. During this stage, parents are very influential in several areas of life such as the moment of choosing friends or in their emotional and psychological development. If during this stage a parent of a teenager is diagnosed with a terminal illness, what happens to the adolescents´ development? Generally, treatment is focused on the patient with terminal illness, but the family is also affected because it belongs to a single system. To form this system, each member of the family, fulfills a role. Every family role helps to maintain balance or homeostasis in the family. When a family member leaves his role, in this case because the diagnosis of terminal illness, then someone should take the role in order to maintain the balance of the family. Sometimes the adolescent has to take and fulfill the family role. This study focuses on the change of family roles in adolescents when they have a parent with a terminal illness. Some changes may go towards adultification; they took a role which is typical of an adult. Another change may shift toward the other end, where the adolescent changes his roles to infantilization, that is to say take a proper role of an infant.
Siendo la adolescencia una etapa en la que los jóvenes están buscando su identidad y desarrollando su personalidad, se considera una etapa difícil de pasar. Durante esta etapa los padres son de mucha influencia en varias áreas de la vida como por ejemplo el momento de escoger amigos o en su desarrollo emocional y sicológico. Si durante esta etapa el padre de un adolescente es diagnosticado con una enfermedad terminal, entonces ¿Qué pasa con el desarrollo del adolescente? Por lo general, el tratamiento se enfoca hacia el paciente con la enfermedad terminal, pero la familia también se ve afectada ya que pertenece a un solo sistema. Para formar este sistema cada miembro de la familia, cumple con un rol. Un rol familiar el cual ayuda a mantener el equilibrio o la homeostasis familiar. Cuando un miembro de la familia deja su rol, en este caso debido al diagnóstico de enfermedad terminal, entonces alguien debe tomar el rol con el fin de mantener el equilibrio de la familia. ¿Qué pasa con el adolescente? Este estudio, se enfoca en el cambio de los roles de los adolescentes cuando tienen un padre con una enfermedad terminal. Los cambios que se observaron fue una variación de sus roles hacia la adultificación, es decir tomaron un rol el cual era propio de un adulto. Otro adolescente tuvo un cambio hacia el otro extremo, donde cambio su rol hacia la infantilización, es decir tomo un rol propio de un infante.
