Description

For two years I worked in a school as a teacher for three and four year old children. During this time I discovered a different world filled with childish, happy and colorful details. When I was faced to the requirement of working on a thesis project I was tempted of combining my experience working with the children at Colegio Menor San Francisco de Quito with the skills I learned while studying animations in USFQ. The short film “Sir Elephant and the Kids” was born after trying to portrait this new and exciting world. In the film an elephant, the main character, is forced to share his space with a group of kids.Sir Elephant has a very inpatient personality and enjoys the sounds of nature and his time alone. Some children interrupt him when they start playing around him. The animal is annoyed by the children’s presence and joyful playing sounds but after some time being angry, the elephant learns to share and tolerate his interaction with them. This thesis project has a classical animation technique; it maintains naive, sweet, childish designs. The colors and elements allude to a small children school creating a cheerful and playful effect.
Durante dos años trabaje en una guardería como profesora de niños de tres y cuatro años. Durante este tiempo conocí un mundo diferente y lleno de detalles infantiles, coloridos y alegres. Cuando me vi frente a la necesidad de trabajar en un proyecto de tesis me vi tentada de combinar la experiencia del trabajo con los niños en el Colegio Menor con las habilidades que aprendí cursando la carrera de Animación Digital. Me atrajo la idea de plasmar este mundo diferente que descubrí en un proyecto y de esta idea nació el Corto “Sir Elephant the Grump and the Kids”, donde el personaje principal que es un elefante se ve forzado a compartir su espacio con niños pequeños. Sir Elephant es un ser con poca paciencia que disfruta de los sonidos de la naturaleza y de su soledad. Varios niños se acercan a jugar cerca del elefante interrumpiéndolo. Este se molesta por su presencia y los sonidos alegres que los niños hacen. Después de haber sido expuesto a los niños, el animal pasa por un momento de enojo y se resigna a compartir e interactuar con ellos. El cortometraje se trabajó en animación clásica, manteniendo diseños tiernos e infantiles. Los colores y elementos aluden al ambiente de una guardería creando un efecto juguetón y alegre.
