This thesis aims to design and implement a Tourist Information System of Imbabura province to be used in the Web. It would permit to publish geographic data, using the valuable application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for the location of touristic attractions and places of interest in the province, with the use of GIS tools based on free software. Even though the methodology has been applied to the geographical context of the province of Imbabura, it could be adjusted to other provinces due to the design of the database. The database is generated based on the model of touristic attraction inventory record provided by the Ministry of Tourism in the province. Simultaneously, it is based on the methodology used to build a free GIS software architecture which involves the installation of desktop applications, servers and web applications. This is a significant contribution to other institutions wishing to store, publish, manage, and administrate cartographic information on the Web. It is essential to provide the theoretical foundation to analyze several options of GIS architecture for publishing geographic data on the Web, where the selection of the best choice will depend on the view of the user (administrator) and the extent of data to be shared.
El presente trabajo de tesis busca diseñar e implementar para la Web un Sistema de Información Turístico de la Provincia de Imbabura, que publique datos geográficos, utilizando la valiosa aplicación de los Sistemas de Información Geográfica en la ubicación de los atractivos turísticos y sitios de interés de la Provincia, con la utilización de herramientas informáticas para SIG basadas en software libre. La metodología ha sido aplicada al ámbito geográfico de la Provincia de Imbabura, sin embargo se podría aplicar a otras Provincias por el diseño de la bases de datos misma que esta generada en base al modelo de ficha de inventario de atractivos turísticos provista por el Ministerio de Turismo de la Provincia; y por la metodología utilizada en la implementación de una arquitectura SIG con software libre que involucra la instalación de aplicaciones de escritorio, servidores, y aplicativos Web; siendo este un aporte por demás sustancial para otras entidades que deseen almacenar, publicar, gestionar y administrar información cartográfica en la Web. Es fundamental disponer del fundamento teórico que analice diversas opciones de arquitecturas SIG para la publicación de datos geográficos en la Web, en donde la elección de la mejor opción dependerá de la visión del usuario (administrador) y la magnitud de datos a compartir.
