One of the most read books by Hispano-Americans since the mid-XIX Century is the Manual de urbanidad, by Manuel Antonio Carreño. Until just a few decades ago it was mandatory reading in most of the Spanish speaking schools of Latin America. The closeness with the book and its author fostered the belief that Carreño was from the same country of each one of the readers. The impact the advices in the book produced to direct the behavior of the readers in the public space marked the supply of this nineteenth-century intellectual from the moment the book appeared. No doubt, the manual has been branded as a publishing phenomenon in the continent, impossible to ignore these days.
