El Estero Salado caracteriza a la ciudad de Guayaquil desde sus inicios. Este sistema estuarino brindaba un ambiente único y diverso donde diferentes especies se podían desarrollar y no solo era un lugar de recreación sino también una fuente de ingresos económicos por la diversidad de especies que permitía formar. Sin embargo, el desmedido crecimiento poblacional de Guayaquil provocó asentamientos no autorizados en sus orillas que trajeron como consecuencia diversos problemas para el sistema estuarino. Descargas tanto líquidas (aguas servidas industriales, aguas servidas domésticas), como sólidas eran vertidas directamente al Estero Salado deteriorando su calidad con el pasar de los años. Diversas entidades han intentado devolverle al Estero Salado su belleza y aguas cristalinas, por lo que, a lo largo de las dos últimas décadas, entre el 2000 y 2020 se han llevado a cabo diversos proyectos para causar un impacto positivo en la calidad del agua del sistema estuarino y también para embellecer sus alrededores. Adicionalmente, con el fin de evaluar la mejora o deterior de la calidad del agua del Estero Salado, se han realizado monitoreos en diferentes ramales para determinar si los proyectos realizados y ejecutados han cumplido su objetivo.
The Estero Salado characterizes the city of Guayaquil since its inception. This estuarine system provided a unique and diverse environment where different species could develop and it was not only a place of recreation but also a source of economic income due to the diversity of species that it allowed to form. However, the excessive population growth of Guayaquil caused unauthorized settlements on its shores, which resulted in various problems for the estuarine system. Both liquid discharges (industrial sewage, domestic sewage) and solid were discharged directly to the Estero Salado, deteriorating its quality over the years. Various entities have tried to return the Estero Salado to its beauty and crystalclear waters, which is why, over the last two decades, various projects have been carried out between 2000 and 2020 to cause a positive impact on the water quality of the estuarine system and also to beautify its surroundings. Additionally, in order to evaluate the improvement or deterioration of the water quality of the Estero Salado, monitoring has been carried out in different branches to determine if the projects carried out and executed have fulfilled their objective.
